Tony Lockwood set up Transforming Potential in 2002. His vision is to support business owners and their teams in focusing primarily on the customer, whether that's finding new, keeping old or looking after existing ones.

"Customers are the best sales and marketing tool of any business - turn them into ambassadors for your company and you have your own growing, dedicated sales force!" explains Tony.

Graduating from Nottingham University with a degree in Spanish, the insurance industry may not have been everyone's first choice but commerce is a global language. So Tony began by selling and advising SMEs on commercial insurance. His career took off and led him to working at senior strategic levels at Royal Insurance, Abbey National and Alliance & Leicester.

Tony worked building and developing smaller and diverse subsidiaries within these larger organisations - always with the emphasis on driving sales and growing the business.

But he never forgot the impact, in the early part of his career, of the passion and experience of his older bosses and colleagues who were not only mentors but great coaches with supreme ability for developing their apprentices.

"I hate seeing experience being driven out of business today. The UK economy relies on SME's to a rapidly growing extent and it's time to provide those firms with access to all the experience, learning and techniques they need to compete effectively in their own markets. At Transforming Potential we do it on an inexpensive (and often no-cost) basis".

Markets now move so fast that there never seems to be time for mentoring and coaching. The "busy fool" syndrome dominates everything that small firms do.
